As part of their ongoing Academic Scholars Programme, students from Years 7 to 9 this week looked in detail at one of the most famous unsolved murder mysteries of medieval England, the ‘Princes in the Tower’ in the time of King Richard III.

Emma Low, English Teacher and Academic Scholars and Oxbridge Co-ordinator, who runs the programme, began by outlining the background to the mystery. Students were then presented with details of the key suspects and their possible motives for the murders.

Their first task was to discuss the evidence in groups and form a case file for each suspect. They then had to present their conclusions to the rest of the class, giving reasons for their choices.

Students rounded off the session by writing down what they thought about Richard III, what the murder of the princes said about life in 15th century England and whether they thought the mystery would ever be solved.

“The ‘Princes in the Tower’ mystery was already familiar to a few of the students,” said Emma. “And it was interesting to see how once they had looked at and discussed the evidence, they changed their minds about who they thought was the murderer.

“Analysing and interrogating evidence is an essential skill for students, whichever subjects and careers paths they decide to take.”
