Seaford's Inaugural Salt Race House Competition

Students have fun at competitive House competitions.

Seaford held an inaugural House Salt Race Competition with each house having a team of two from Year 9 and Year 10. The competition was a test of initiative and practical skills, the aim was to make the most pure salt from grit salt – working together safely.

Judging the competition proved to be a scientific experiment in itself! Chris Hawley, Head of Science, said: “The competition was very difficult to judge - a simple weight of pure salt was the aim. We had only one house that managed to return beautiful salt ready for the table. To judge, I had to separate into categories first. The dryer the salt the higher the ranking, then separate by weight.

Everyone did really well and received positives from their Heads of House! The clear winners were Adair - both pairs returned good amounts of pure salt. Second was Kymes - Sophie on her own produced the best product out of everyone.

The next three houses were too ambitious and ran out of time - some due to being really careful and thorough so that was a shame, I will amend the instructions if we run it again next year. Third was Charmandean, fourth was Corsica with Millburgh in fifth place. Well done to everyone who took part.”
