Emma Low, English Teacher and Cambridge graduate has started her new role as Academic Scholars and Oxbridge Co-ordinator to lead the Scholars Programme.

Emma held an Oxbridge and Russell Group university applications session and worked with a group of Year 12 students to look at the difference between Oxbridge and other universities. Students carried out a task to look at how to choose your university and courses and the entry requirements.

Emma said: “Students can apply to five universities, and I always advise selecting two to three desirable choices and a couple of safe options so that students still have great choices if things don’t go quite the way they expect.”

Students carried out a research task to find three universities that appeal to them based on their location and then they looked at comparing course content for the same subject at two universities.

Emma said: “Students can use university websites to research course overview and content as they won’t be the same at all universities. Many courses have year abroad placements or field trips. The Natural Sciences course at Cambridge is a great example of a course where a student can mould the elements they study to suit their interests. I was really impressed with the variety of courses our Year 12 students are considering and I'm looking forward to more sessions where we explore choices in more depth.”

In Emma’s next session she is covering what our Year 12 students can do now to show they have a real passion for their subject and how they can show academic curiosity.
