Meet the Head - Matt Williams, Seaford College

What are you most proud of at your school?

What first attracted me to Seaford was the warmth and authenticity of the community, and the breadth of opportunities for our students. Academic success matters enormously, but I am most proud of the young people who leave us as confident, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals.

Why did you want to become a head teacher?

I didn't set out to become a teacher, let alone a Head. Once I entered the profession, I quickly realised the profound impact education can have on young people's lives. Becoming a Head gave me the opportunity to shape not just individual pupils' experiences, but the culture and values of an entire community.

What was your favourite subject at school and why?

English Literature. I loved the power of stories and the way great writing can challenge your thinking, broaden your perspective, and help you see the world through someone else's eyes. English taught me that words matter, whether you are reading a novel or trying to inspire a school community.

How do you relax outside of school?

Sport has always been a big part of my life. I love watching rugby (as a family we are big Bath fans) and cricket and continue to follow Aston Villa through the highs and lows. I also enjoy good food, going to the theatre, and walking our daft labrador, Murphy.

If you were to become prime minister for a day, what’s the first thing you would change?

I would ensure that every young person, regardless of background, had access to a rich programme of sport, music, drama, outdoor education and other co-curricular opportunities. Some of life's most important lessons are learned beyond the classroom.

What is the most surprising thing about you that people might not know?

I was once smuggled into northern France in the back of a Land Rover and, in my younger days, played the drums in an ABBA tribute band. Neither experience has proved particularly useful in school leadership. Not yet anyway.
