Academic Scholars Session Year 12 - How to choose a college for Oxbridge applications
An informative and interactive session looking at Oxbridge college choices.

Emma Low (Academic Scholars and Oxbridge Coordinator) held a session with our Oxbridge group last week on how to choose a college. Emma begins working with the Oxbridge group and students planning to study medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine at the start of Year 12, as the application process for these courses starts earlier.

The session began with Emma explaining the difference between collegiate universities (such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Durham) and campus universities. She explained: “Teaching quality is consistent across all colleges; however, certain colleges may have specialist teachers and researchers who are important to you. It’s good to look at who is working there to see if they’re conducting research you’re interested in.”
Emma then held a quiz to help students identify which colleges might suit them as individuals. For example, the quiz explored college size, asking students to consider whether they’d prefer a more intimate and relaxed environment or a larger, busier college. At the end of the quiz, students received suggestions for colleges that might suit them. They then explored virtual tours of these colleges and the departments they plan to apply to.

Emma said: “Seaford is affiliated with Churchill College in Cambridge, and our Oxbridge group will be visiting at the end of January. During the trip, students will have the opportunity to visit colleges, attend lectures, and experience what life is like at Cambridge.
In the next sessions, students will focus on writing personal statements and developing interview skills.”
