A quote from John Green, Headmaster, as students are awarded centre accessed grades

17th August, 2020

Dear Parents, Carers and Guardians,

RE: Courtesy Update

Following my letter yesterday, many of you will now be aware that the Government has, in my opinion, made a correct and much needed U-turn in that Centre Assessed Grades will now be used as the respective final grade for all examinations. Please note the statement from Roger Taylor, Chair, Ofqual:

‘We have therefore decided that students will be awarded their centre assessment for this summer – that is, the grade their school or college estimated was the grade they would most likely have achieved in their exam – or the moderated grade, whichever is higher.’

Ofqual have written to us to state that they now need to provide urgent clarity on how the process will work, and that they are “already working with the Department for Education, universities and everyone else affected by this issue.”

We will continue to monitor all updates, including the procedure of how to release the amended grades to our students, as well as waiting to hear further about potential university places and procedures.

As stated in my previous communication, I would like to make it very clear that both the Upper Sixth and Year 11 year groups have been affected so much by the public examinations’ lack of clarity and no-one should underestimate how challenging this process has been for our wonderful students over the past few months. I am really pleased that our students have been put first, and that all students will now get centre accessed grades for both A Level & GCSE results.

Finally, I remain so proud of all our students’ sheer optimism and resilience, and we will continue to do all that we can to support them both pastorally and academically. Indeed, as part of our post-examination service to students and parents, senior members of staff and our Heads of Department continue to be very much on hand to support and advise on university places, Sixth Form options and next steps for our students.

With kind regards,

John Green, Headmaster
