Congratulations to our debate team!

The debate team of Amy Allison, Elle Thomson and Kieran Rutherford successfully argued their way through the first round of the English Speaking Union Mace competition on Zoom last night, competing against teams from Christ's Hospital, Churcher's College and Handcross Park School.

Alison Thomas, Head of History and Politics, said: “The students’ arguments opposing the motion that “This house believes that environmental campaigners should focus on lobbying the government and not on individuals’ behaviour” focused on the power of young people to drive the behaviour of adults in making changes to limit the climate crisis. They also highlighted the problems with expecting governments who rely in being voted in with popular policies, to be the lead in making change happen. Very constructive feedback was given by the judge from the ESU so that the students can go into round two acting on that feedback and hopefully performing even more impressively!”

Kevin Finniear, Head of English said: "There were amazing performances from all three students, they were composed, articulate and sharply focused on the issues.”

Ad Alta for the next round everyone!

Debate Club is organised by Alison Thomas and Kevin Finniear and runs on Monday afternoons during prep.
