Seaford's community has come together to connect with our Prep School reading initiative.

Jenny Lyne, Year 4 teacher and Key Stage 2 Curriculum Coordinator, has introduced a reading initiative whilst Seaford is physically closed due to lockdown.  Jenny has paired our Sixth Form students to hear/read with Prep School children, virtually.  It has been a huge success and a highlight of the week for many students.

Seaford has a long tradition of our older students helping younger students and it’s a very important part of our culture, it binds us as a community.  Here is the feedback Jenny has received from parents and students.

Reading Initiative Feedback from Parents:

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for this reading opportunity for Emilia and Xanthe - it is such a wonderful idea and brilliant for both the younger ones and the Sixth Form students.  They have both loved their sessions today, Emilia is still in hers as we speak and I have listened into both sessions, I’m really impressed!” Mrs Job

“Another way that Seaford Connected Learning is working so well and showing that the teachers, and older students are going the extra mile to support our children. Thank you Mrs Lyne.” Ellie Griffiths

“Thank you so much for organising this it’s a great idea and I think Max is totally fed up of reading to me! So it will be a great change to the monotony. I really appreciate, all the efforts of Seaford during these crazy times.” Tamara Hickie

“Thank you so much for organising this, I think it’s a wonderful idea. I have always loved how the Senior students mix with the Prep School and I think it shows how united we are as a school. Have a wonderful weekend.” Camilla Eely

“Thank you it’s brilliant, Charlie really enjoyed it, and it’s lovely for him to have contact with the older children. As you say they are wonderful role models for him, they really are an asset to the school. Thank you again, have a great weekend.” Kirsty Taylor

“What a wonderful idea I am really pleased about this as I am struggling to read with him every day. He is set up and will be on standby ready for tomorrow.” Seaford parent

“This is super Jenny, it’s all marked down on the timetable. Please do forward my thanks to Megan and Scarlett for their help and support with this and for sparing their time too. It’s such a brilliant thing for Seaford to be able to do.” Jen Kemp-Potter

“I am 100% behind this idea, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the Prep children.  George really enjoyed his sessions it’s invaluable and for those that need it even twice a week would be great. After all reading is the biggest foundation.” Louise

Reading Initiative Feedback from Prep Children:

“It helps me with my reading and I love it because we always have a good laugh afterwards.” Edie

“As a family we think the Sixth Form Reading Initiative is a wonderful idea.  Lily is thoroughly enjoying her reading sessions with Megan and Scarlett.  The fact that they can have a social chat first, share things that have happened that week and then read and share a story with someone is fantastic.  It brings the school together which has always been something that we love about Seaford and provides extra social interaction with others within the school family.” The Kemp Potters

Reading Initiative Feedback from Sixth Form Students:

“It was great! I think it was xxxx who was the stronger reader but both were brilliant and we got through the whole book with time to chat about cars and games at the end :) We would be very happy to choose a book with them next week. They were both there and we finished the book! I can’t remember which, but one was much more expressive and the other did good full stops. It’s was really fun.” Erin and Tati

Joe Pearce and Izzy Anderson:

“The session went really well and the boys were perfectly behaved and very interactive. They all read a few pages and did very well.” Joe

“The Zoom session with them was such an experience and really took me back to when I was little. It was so good to see some new faces and speak to new people. They read the pages very well and when they needed help they asked for it.  I’m looking forward to next week! Izzy

Maddy Chandler and Jess Escott:

“Just wanted to let you know that we have finished for today and it went really well. Jess and I thought XXXXX was really lovely, she read the book really well, for example, when she couldn’t pronounce a word she went back over it. We also took it in turns to read a page each which I think went really well and in general it couldn’t have gone better!! Thank you again and see you next week.”

“The reading went really well and I think the girls enjoyed it. The toys party was a big hit and Lottie introduced us to all of the toys in her room! I think the book might have been a bit easy as they had no difficulty with any of the words, so we said we might do a harder one next time.”  Grace & Sammy Brown

“Thanks for sharing the feedback from Emilia’s mum. I really enjoyed the reading yesterday!  I’m glad to hear that Emilia enjoyed it. We also had a chat with her about how she is finding online school and her favourite animals, and she showed us her two guinea pigs. Thank you for this opportunity.” Tabby
