Students talk about their experiences in Berlin.

German 20th century history was brought to life over half term as Senior and Sixth Form students headed off for a fascinating four-night trip to Berlin.

History teachers and students talk about the visit which took in many of the most famous locations that made Berlin one of the centres of political and cultural life in Europe for much of the last century.

Students visited the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, the Olympic Stadium, Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and the Spy Museum, among others.

They talk about how moved they were by many of the locations. “I don’t know how to sum up the visit to the Holocaust Memorial, it was incredible,” Amy Styles “We also spent time just walking through the streets and seeing the difference between the west and east, which is still so apparent.”

Seaford's knowledgeable and enthusiastic History teachers led guided tours around the city that linked directly to the students’ coursework. Head of History, Alison Thomas, said it was very powerful for the students to see what they had previously only learned about in textbooks. “The teachers really brought the trip to life,” said Immy Stanley-Evans.

Many students said that the trip was a great way to embed their knowledge from the GCSE course and since coming back they have shared their experiences with their class.
