Debating Club

Debating Club gives students a chance to develop their public speaking and debating skills by engaging with topical subjects and more abstract philosophical questions.

The year is structured around our involvement in external competitions against other local schools, which provide an opportunity for all members of the club to participate in lively and competitive discussions.

We’ve taken part in events held by the Rotary Club in Chichester, ESU public speaking competitions, and have achieved success, winning individual awards for best speaker and best questioner, with our teams placing highly.

We also take part in the ESU Schools Mace, which is one of the country’s most prestigious debating competitions and open exclusively to Sixth Formers, with top schools competing from across England. It is a traditional parliamentary-style debate with two team members either proposing or opposing a predefined motion. Seaford regularly progresses past the first round, seeing off competition from selective schools such as Churchers and PGS, and our aim is to progress even further.

The Summer Term ends with the House Debating Competition. A rambunctious and enjoyable occasion for audience and participants, it’s a highlight of the school year.
