Seaford College is celebrating as students achieve their best ever A Level results. This is the first cohort to come through to A Level from Year 9, when John Green took up his role as Headmaster five years ago. John’s focus on Academic Seaford, his restructure of the school and the increased focus on ambition for all pupils has paid dividends for all pupils. John Green said, “I’m immensely proud of what all of our students have achieved, we’ve consistently seen improvements each year and it’s great to see our best ever results this year, enabling our students to go onto to their chosen route on leaving the School. Seaford is a proud academically non-selective School and no matter what pathway our students have taken, they’ve met our academic expectations at all levels and achieved their best ever A Level & BTEC results. I’m really pleased to see that our students and teachers have risen to the challenge of the new tougher linear system for A Levels, which makes these results even more impressive. Despite these superb academic achievements, Seaford has maintained its core ethos and these results were achieved in a non-pressurised environment where students have also exceled in extra-curricular pursuits alongside their studies. Most importantly these results have been achieved with a smile on our students’ faces, in a happy and supportive community.”
Seaford students celebrated success across our broad curriculum. Notable A Level successes securing 2A* and an A are:
Tom Hennessy (from Cranleigh, heading to Durham to read History), Joseph Hill (from East Dean, heading to Warwick to read Maths & Physics), Zac Hodson (from Arundel, heading to Bristol to read History), Ylvali Koch (from Mexico, is heading to university after an internship at BMW), William Morris (from Graffham, heading to Bath to read Biology) and James Thompson (from Guildford, heading to the University of Birmingham to read History).
Holly Gyles (from Graffham) achieved A*AA and is heading to University of Birmingham to read Sports & Exercise Science. Alex Herghelegiu (from Romania) secured 2As & 2Bs. Josef Amin (from Graffham is reading Biological Sciences) & Kristina Pintar achieved 3 As. Winston Murrin (from Fernhurst) gained A*,AB and is heading to Exeter to read History. Alfie Ransom (from New Malden) secured 2As and a B. Helena Kingdon-Butcher (from Bognor Regis) and Ruby Pritchard (from Midhurst who is heading to the University of Birmingham to read English) have achieved A* & 2Bs. Eddie Gammon (from Chichester) gained A & 2Bs and is going to Bournemouth University to study Product Design. We have a record number of students heading for Russell Group and 1st choice Universities and we wish them success in their future studies.”
John Green added, “My vision when I took on the role as Headmaster was to increase the academic ambition of Seaford and these results are testament to the personal ambition our students have. I believe that ambition pays off! I introduced Challenge Grades, a system that regularly updates students with their progress, and gives them a Challenge Grade for the end of their course. If students work hard and have the ambition to succeed, we support them in every way to achieve their results. We have a tutoring system that enables regular updates and support and a world-class level of pastoral care that enables our students to thrive and achieve. Joe Hill is a great example of a student who has achieved fantastic results at Seaford and gained an A* in both Maths and Further Maths with an impressive 100% pass mark in a large number of his modules.”
John Green said, “We’ve also seen a record number of students taking the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) in their final year with an incredible 80% achieving the top A* & A grading. This is a highly coveted award, which is greatly valued by universities. Students, alongside their demanding academic studies, also took on an independent research project in their final year. They researched a wide variety of topics beyond the curriculum and in many ways the EPQ reflects the way students will need to independently study at university and colleges. These results show that our students are independent learners and have the creativity and curiosity to research their own projects. On leaving Seaford they are ready to follow their own academic path for future success.
Seaford’s ethos is personal bests for every child and we have various strategies to achieve this. We carefully advise Seaford students when they come into Year 12 on the best pathway for them. This could be an academic pathway of purely A Levels, a vocational pathway with BTECs or a combination of the two. We want our students to get their personal bests and whichever pathway they have followed we have seen our best ever results. Seaford is proud to offer A Levels and BTECs and has a variety of different students in our community.
Our Head Boy and Head Girl are perfect examples of different types of students achieving their personal bests on our different pathways; both are very smart in different ways. Nicholas Caines achieved 2 Distinction* in BTEC Business Studies & Sport and a B in A Level Geography. He’s an accomplished sportsman, playing a key role in Seaford’s rugby teams and winner of the Bill Cuthbertson ‘Cubby’ Cup at Seaford’s Annual Sports Awards. He aspires to work in agriculture and is heading to Harper Adams to study Agriculture. Our Head Girl Holly Gyles achieved A* A Level PE & 2 As Biology and Business Studies and is heading to University of Birmingham to read Sports Exercise and Science. Holly is also an accomplished sportswoman and fulfilled a big role with her commitment as Head Girl in her final year.”
Other notable successes include Alexander Cassar who achieved 2 Distinctions and a B in A Level Geography and is heading to Oxford Brookes University to read Geography, Finn Stovold achieved 3 Distinction* and is heading to St Mary’s Twickenham to read Sports Management. Imogen Dixon achieved a Distinction* and a Distinction and is heading to West London to study Event Management.
