Seaford team perform admirably at National Speaking Competition

debating finalOn Thursday 2nd February three Seaford students took part in the West Sussex Branch Final of the ESU Churchill National Public Speaking Competition for schools.

The Final took place in the Sherborne Room of the Bishop’s Palace in Chichester Cathedral and Seaford were speaking against six other teams with only one place in the Regional Final on offer.

The Seaford team came from Year 9 and consisted of Marcus Fairweather (main speaker); Sam French (chair); and Harry Thompson (questioner). The topic Marcus spoke on was “There is terror in knowing what the world is really about” and was set by the English Speaking Union.

The Seaford team performed extremely well but the standard of competition was very high and sadly, on this occasion they did not progress to the next round.

Speaking after the event John Doy, the Director of Academic Performance at Seaford College said, “I thought our young team of Year 9’s coped admirably against some older and more experienced teams. The standard of competition was exceptional and our team should be congratulated on a spirited first performance.”
