Inspirational speaker James Shone gives impactful presentation at Seaford College

3A3A6208webWe were fortunate to welcome James Shone, an inspirational speaker, yesterday to give a talk to the Middle School (Years 9-11) during their personal development time. The talk formed part of Seaford’s Personal Development Programme which focusses on building self-awareness, personal responsibility and independence in our pupils. Kevin Rich, Head of Year 9 organised the talk and introduced James by saying: “I worked with James 20 years ago out in Kenya and he was always an inspirational teacher in the classroom. After a life changing experience he is now an inspirational speaker and I’m sure you’ll all get a lot out of the talk today.”

James (who has the charity icanandiam) was a wonderful communicator and shared his remarkable personal journey. Having discovered he had a brain tumour aged 39, it completely changed the course of his life. He spoke about looking up when life derails you, always looking forwards as there are always endless possibilities in life. He said: “The past is a teacher but not a great master, don’t hold onto the past, move on.” He then quoted Sir Winston Churchill; “In adversity you can choose to give up or get up and go and do something and not bow down to self-pity”. James summarised: “Look up forward and out and not down, back and in.”3A3A6156web

James then discussed teenage mental health and the negative impact that social media can have. He then used the ‘icanandiam balloon’ to discuss the idea of inflating balloons of self-belief. He spoke about how our students can inflate their balloon through; feeling they belong, feeling valued, feeling good about something and feeling secure about their future. If you have an inflated balloon, it helps you navigate the ups and downs of life and ultimately builds resilience. He said that more than A* grades or First Class degrees, resilience is what employers are looking for in candidates.

He added that setbacks in life are a springboard to refine and reflect and to build resilience. His parting message was to have the right attitude, dream big, and make your goals realistic. Remember how many good things you have in life and look at what you’re good at, do what life made you to do and that th3A3A6279webe future isn’t just about making money. “The journey of life is our choice, choose to believe you can and that you are of value.”

At the end of the talk whilst thanking James, Kevin Rich added: “There are two stand out messages from today that I’d like you all to think about. Firstly, find your passion and act upon it. Secondly, work together to be part of a school that supports mutual encouragement, be supportive and collaborative with each other.” He later thanked James on Twitter, “for an incredibly impactful and authentic presentation, our students loved it.”

George Vernon, Director of Middle School reflected on the talk and said: “I have the greatest respect for James Shone and I found his talk utterly life affirming. He reassured us about some cherished morals3A3A6272web, instinctive values and the importance of mental resilience, which are so easy to forget in this fast-paced modern world. The impact and influence that James had on both pupils and staff was literally mesmerising; the whole of the middle school sat totally transfixed by James’ story, one that taught them how to face the daunting prospects of some of life’s most brutal challenges. His speech was both heart breaking and harrowing, but ultimately James’ audience left the auditorium enraptured with a strange sense of elation. No matter what life throws at you, there is nothing that you cannot overcome. I can and I am! These lessons will no doubt become more and more clear to our pupils in the future, whichever route they have to take.”

Seaford College is once again celebrating as students achieve their best ever results, this week for GCSE. John Green took up his role as Headmaster 5 years ago and is seeing his successful strategy for the school pay dividends, with the best ever A Level and GCSE results. His focus on Academic Seaford, his restructuring of the school and the increased focus on ambition for all pupils has led to these superb results. John Green added, “My vision when I took on the role as Headmaster was to increase the academic ambition of Seaford and these results are testament to the personal ambition our students have. I believe that ambition pays off! I introduced Challenge Grades, a system that regularly updates students with their progress, and gives them a Challenge Grade for the end of their course. If students work hard and have the ambition to succeed, we support them in every way to achieve their results. We have a tutoring system that enables regular updates and support and a world-class level of pastoral care that enables our students to thrive and achieve.”

Students commented that, “you couldn’t have done any more to prepare us for our exams, you’ve given us everything, it’s now down to us,” and this filled me with great confidence for both results days. Students have benefited from revision seminars, an extensive revision programme, a mock exam process and true wrap-around care.”

John Green said, “We’ve seen superb results across all subjects. English Language and English Literature have achieved phenomenal grade 9 results, bucking the national trend. English Language achieved 19% grade 9, and 23% Grade 8, with 42% of our students achieving the equivalent of what was the old A* grade in English. Impressively, 85% of students achieved 9-6 (A*-B) in English Language.” For English Literature we achieved 24% grade 9, and 15% grade 8, with 39% of our students achieving the equivalent of what was the old A* grade, with 77% of our students achieving English grades 9-6 (A*-B). For individual sciences we achieved 33% Grade 9, 44% Grade 8, which means 77% aSeaford's Head of English Hayley Johnson celebrating with her teamchieved what was the equivalent of the old A* grade with 100% achieving grades 9-6 (A*-B). When you take into account that the national average this year for students achieving grade 9 is 4.3% we have excelled and once again bucked the national trend.”

John Green added, “We take care and time to consider and support each and every pupil as an individual, which is at the heart of Seaford’s ethos both inside and outside of the classroom. We place immense value on the fact that our students across the ability range have coped with the increasing demands of the more rigorous new GCSE courses, and have done so whilst excelling as much outside of the classroom as they have within. They can all look forwards to Sixth Form with a real sense of ambition and purpose.

“We’ve seen a 35% increase in student number in the past 5 years and we now have waiting lists for all year groups. Seaford is attracting students from prestigious Prep Schools in the area and these results will further cement Seaford as the potential first choice school in the area.

“Seaford’s ethos is personal bests for every child and we have various strategies to achieve this. We carefully advise Seaford students when they come into Year 9 on the best combination of GCSE subjects for them. We then advise them again in Year 12 on the best pathway at Sixth Form. At this stage, this could be an academic pathway of purely A Levels, a vocational pathway with BTECs or a combination of the two. We want our students to get their personal bests whichever pathway they have followed, and we have also seen our best ever results for our Sixth Form students last week on results day. Seaford is proud to offer A Levels and BTECs and has a variety of different students in our community.”

Seaford College is celebrating as students achieve their best ever A Level results. This is the first cohort to come through to A Level from Year 9, when John Green took up his role as Headmaster five years ago. John’s focus on Academic Seaford, his restructure of the school and the increased focus on ambition for all pupils has paid dividends for all pupils. John Green said, “I’m immensely proud of what all of our students have achieved, we’ve consistently seen improvements each year and it’s great to see our best ever results this year, enabling our students to go onto to their chosen route on leaving the School. Seaford is a proud academically non-selective School and no matter what pathway our students have taken, they’ve met our academic expectations at all levels and achieved their best ever A Level & BTEC results. I’m really pleased to see that our students and teachers have risen to the challenge of the new tougher linear system for A Levels, which makes these results even more impressive. Despite these superb academic achievements, Seaford has maintained its core ethos and these results were achieved in a non-pressurised environment where students have also exceled in extra-curricular pursuits alongside their studies. Most importantly these results have been achieved with a smile on our students’ faces, in a happy and supportive community.”

Tom Hennessy (from Cranleigh, heading to Durham to read History), Joseph Hill (from East Dean, heading to Warwick to read Maths & Physics), Zac Hodson (from Arundel, heading to Bristol to read History), Ylvali Koch (from Mexico, is heading to university after an internship at BMW), William Morris (from Graffham, heading to Bath to read Biology) and James Thompson (from Guildford, heading to the University of Birmingham to read History).

Holly Gyles (from GraHeadmaster John Green celebrating Seaford's best ever A Level results!ffham) achieved A*AA and is heading to University of Birmingham to read Sports & Exercise Science. Alex Herghelegiu (from Romania) secured 2As & 2Bs. Josef Amin (from Graffham is reading Biological Sciences) & Kristina Pintar achieved 3 As. Winston Murrin (from Fernhurst) gained A*,AB and is heading to Exeter to read History. Alfie Ransom (from New Malden) secured 2As and a B. Helena Kingdon-Butcher (from Bognor Regis) and Ruby Pritchard (from Midhurst who is heading to the University of Birmingham to read English) have achieved A* & 2Bs. Eddie Gammon (from Chichester) gained A & 2Bs and is going to Bournemouth University to study Product Design. We have a record number of students heading for Russell Group and 1st choice Universities and we wish them success in their future studies.”

Joe Hill is a great example of a student who has achieved fantastic results at Seaford and gained an A* in both Maths and Further Maths with an impressive 100% pass mark in a large number of his modules.”

John Green said, “We’ve also seen a record number of students taking the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) in their final year with an incredible 80% achieving the top A* & A grading. This is a highly coveted award, which is greatly valued by universities. Students, alongside their demanding academic studies, also took on an independent research project in their final year. They researched a wide variety of topics beyond the curriculum and in many ways the EPQ reflects the way students will need to independently study at university and colleges. These results show that our students are independent learners and have the creativity and curiosity to research their own projects. On leaving Seaford they are ready to follow their own academic path for future success.

Our Head Boy and Head Girl are perfect examples of different types of students achieving their personal bests on our different pathways; both are very smart in different ways. Nicholas Caines achieved 2 Distinction* in BTEC Business Studies & Sport and a B in A Level Geography. He’s an accomplished sportsman, playing a key role in Seaford’s rugby teams and winner of the Bill Cuthbertson ‘Cubby’ Cup at Seaford’s Annual Sports Awards. He aspires to work in agriculture and is heading to Harper Adams to study Agriculture. Our Head Girl Holly Gyles achieved A* A Level PE & 2 As Biology and Business Studies and is heading to University of Birmingham to read Sports Exercise and Science. Holly is also an accomplished sportswoman and fulfilled a big role with her commitment as Head Girl in her final year.”

Other notable successes include Alexander Cassar who achieved 2 Distinctions and a B in A Level Geography and is heading to Oxford Brookes University to read Geography, Finn Stovold achieved 3 Distinction* and is heading to St Mary’s Twickenham to read Sports Management. Imogen Dixon achieved a Distinction* and a Distinction and is heading to West London to study Event Management.

Seaford Go To The NSEA National Eventers’ Challenge National Championships

Taking place over the bank holiday weekend, Seaford had qualified three teams at three different levels as well as a team competing in the Elite Show Jumping class.

Team SeafordWe began the weekend with the Mini Derby National Championships at 70cm for children aged under 14. Our team was made up of Emily Cook, Lauren Goldsmith & Lorna Leatherdale – Edwards from the Prep School.

In the Warm Up class our riders went for steady clear rounds and were placed 15th, 16th & 19th out of 75 riders and in the team class Lorna & Emily had fantastic clear rounds with Lauren just having a slight navigation issue over a long twisty course for a very creditable 8th team place.

The following day was a long hot day indeed. We met for course walks at 9.30am, jumped the warm up class at 10.30am and then the 85cm National class at 7.45pm due to several delays. This time our team was made up of a mixture of riders from the Prep & Senior School: Olivia Macdonald, Lorna Leatherdale – Edwards, Rufus Uloth and Jessie Shute riding her sister’s pony and standing in for Grace Bolton. Lorna’s pony took a dislike to the notorious water jump refusing to get his feet wet but the other riders jumped fast accomplished rounds and were really unlucky to roll a couple of poles to finish with a team score of 8 faults. Although unplaced this time it was a great experience and one we can definitely improve on.

On the final day, it was our Senior School riders turn for the National 95cm Eventers’ Challenge class. The team was made up of Flora James, Jessie Schute, Evie Marchant and Olivia Macdonald who jumped the Hickstead Elite 1.00m class as a warm-up coming 5th. They then went on to come a fantastic 4th in the National Championships which was an amazing achievement.

Sefaord's proud ridersThe parents on all three days were very supportive and the riders a pleasure to work with. We have many comments from other schools’ parents on our team camaraderie, cheerfulness and rider encouragement. In fact one mother, whose daughter goes to another school, told us that she wished she had sent her daughter to Seaford because of our riding teams.
