Seaford Prep School, College Raise Funds for Halow cycling 250 miles alongside Damon Hill Seaford Prep School, Gillian Rees, cycled 250 miles alongside Formula One World Champion Damon Hill, to take part in the Two Boats Cycle to raise money for the halow Project.
Gillian, along with nearly 80 fellow cyclists, set off from Putney Bridge, pedalled to Portsmouth to catch the ferry to St Malo, and cycled onwards to Caen. After a brief pit-stop, they returned to the Channel, took a ferry to Portsmouth and cycled to the finish line at Guildford on Sunday afternoon.
Gillian, is a novice cyclist and showed incredible determination to complete the 250 miles in 48 hrs. She chatted to Damon Hill – who is patron of The Halow Project – during the ride and celebrated the end of the race by having a photo with him. The Two Boats Cycle has been organized to raise money for learning disability charity The Halow Project, which gives support to 16 to 35 year olds.[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JZ45H4LnKA
Gillian is dedicated to raising funds for halow and said: “I think the charity is fab. It fills a gap in the community to support young adults with learning difficulties to make their own choices in life”. Gillian now has the cycling bug, she was cycling into the wind most of the way and found the race tough but is very proud of her achievement. She said: “it was tough but it didn’t help that we were running late at the start of the race.I didn’t have time to check my bike and struggled to get up speed for the first 25 miles. When I took a break and checked my bike I realised I’d been cycling with my brake pads on, effectively trying to cycle whilst breaking!! Once this was fixed I was able to average 15 mph.” Gillian has already raised £1,500 for halow from the ride and the total raised from the event so far stands at £75,000. There will be Strawberries & Cream, a Pimms tent, an Inflatable Assault Course, Face Painting, Welly Throwing, a plant stall amongst other exciting activities. Families are invited to bring a picnic rug, enjoy some food & drink and have a fun afternoon relaxing and raising funds for halow.”
